ABOUT THE BOYS' PROGRAM

How is a travel team different from a Youth League team?
Travel teams are a major step in commitment and cost from Youth teams. Travel teams are part of USA Volleyball and compete in local and regional tournaments (Richmond, MD, PA, NY). The season for travel teams is typically five or six months with a tournament averaging two weekends a month. Practices are two times per week.

What's the schedule for The St. James Boy’s team?
End of November or early December through early or mid-June.
Two 2-hour practices per week with optional clinics/workouts.
Practice times and days are posted on the individual team pages.

What ages can play in this team?
We are looking to have six teams this season, 13U through 18U. Please see USAV Age Definition Chart for age cut off dates.

What ‘level' of play is expected of the teams?
Teams will compete against teams from Richmond, VA Beach, Maryland, Northern Virginia and Delaware. The level of competition will be considerably higher than Youth league. Prior playing experience certainly helps, but it’s not required; the longer season provides us the time to develop players with any experience.

Our family has scheduled vacations that may conflict with practices and some weekend tournaments. Is that Okay?
We expect a high level of commitment; however, we believe that volleyball should enhance your child’s life rather than overtake it. We realize families travel and kids have other interests in their young lives – communicate with the coach to make sure everyone is on the same page so there are no surprises.

Who are the coaches?
Please visit the individual team pages

I'm attending tryouts from another boys club. Is that Okay?
Absolutely! We encourage that you attend tryouts at multiple clubs. Tryouts serve to find the best fit for you too! Ask coaches questions about their philosophy, team goals, playing time policies, etc. Make sure that you like the coaches as much as the coaches like you.

What's the playing time policy?
Everyone will get a chance to play, but it's not an equal-playing time policy.

I'm interested but would like to speak with someone?
You can reach out to Coach Noel at 301.802.9873  or noel.okoye@thestjames.com.  He's also our Travel Director.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on the court.
Go ST-J!
